Let me stress at the outset that I don’t think reading many books is important - not for the average person anyway. Now, where should you start? Someone recently asked me to make a list of some of the books I have in mind that are substance, not suds. This means that at 250 words a minute, 15 minutes a day, you could read about 20 average-sized books a year! Read Well, Not (Necessarily) Much So, if we take 350 words per page and divide that into 1,368,750 words per year, we get 3,910 pages per year. Now most books have between 300 and 400 words per page. Multiply that times 250 words per minute and you get 1,368,750 words per year. In one year (365 days) you would read for 5,475 minutes. Suppose you read about 250 words a minute and that you resolve to devote just 15 minutes a day to serious theological reading to deepen your grasp of biblical truth. Most of us don’t aspire very high in our reading because we don’t feel like there is any hope. When this was shown to me, it changed my life. So, I want to show you something really encouraging. Now, I know what you are thinking: I don’t have the time or the ability to get anywhere in books like that. Read rich doctrinal books about the one who called you to his glory and excellence (2 Peter 1:3). I have said many times, Read! Read! Read! But beware of wasting your time on theological foam and suds. I love encouraging people to read weighty, worthy, readable Christian books.

Bono could deliver the vocals in a different way. “From the position of being in our sixties, those lyrics and those songs meant something, and it meant Edge could slow them down. “We started to see that a lot of the early songs that had felt incomplete or unfinished or naive, when one looked at them now, those were songs with a lot of DNA and intuition on them,” Clayton explains. Let me see if I can come up with a different space for those songs so we can present them in a way where the narrative of the song in some way is associated to the arc of the book.'” The Edge began creating drastically different arrangements, mostly stripped down and more intimate, sometimes changing lyrics and even vocalists The Edge, in fact, stepped up to sing several of the tracks himself. Edge said, ‘Let me have a look at those titles. We started to talk about what we could be doing while (Bono) was busy making this book. The album, according to Clayton, “was one of the more organic processes that U2 engaged in. That album, according to Clayton, was spurred directly by Bono’s best-selling Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story, in which the singer used 40 U2 songs as a narrative vehicle for his story. Songs of Surrender is certainly a project that came as a surprise. Pursued to the last Roman fort east of the Rhine, they are besieged by thousands of bloodthirsty tribesmen. Just a few hundred legionaries, including Tullus, manage to escape. Three legions, upwards of fourteen thousand men have been annihilated, and three treasured Eagle standards have been lost. This is superb military historical fiction, putting us at the centre of Rome's most infamous and terrifying defeat through the strength of the characters of the men, of all ranks, who fought it. The Roman defeat is overwhelming, but it is not until the third day of the massacre that the scale of Arminius' victory becomes clear. Ben Kane has written some great novels over the years but, in my opinion, Eagles at War is the very finest. Trapping Varus' legionaries between a hillside and a marsh, and thereby preventing them from forming up or using their artillery, Arminius and his warriors wreak a terrible slaughter. The Germans are led by Arminius, a chieftain who is a trusted ally of Rome – and a man who has been secretly planning to betray the empire since childhood. As they prepare to return to their winter quarters, they are lured off the road and ambushed by German warriors. I sat down to write 32AA, my first Chick Lit attempt, after many years and many rejection letters for my romance manuscripts (more on that in a bit). Hands up, yes, I deliberately set out to write a Chick Lit novel. How did you come to write it? Did you set out to write a Chick Lit novel or was this a case where you wrote a novel and it just happened to fit into the Chick Lit genre? Regardless, Michelle’s answers are delightful and honest and fun. And, ironically enough, as you’ll read below, her books are not yet published in England. – may help her in reaching American audiences, many of whom at times find the modern English voice perhaps more foreign than the historical English voice. for a number of years but is soon heading back to the U.K. I imagine that this author’s living arrangements – she has lived in the U.S. I enjoyed getting to know Michelle ever-so-slightly at the recent RWA conference, but it was Robin who conducted this Q&A. She believes her Chick Lit novels are romance hybrids, which I think broadens their appeal and perhaps takes the “scare” out of them for some readers. Michelle Cunnah captured the imaginations of many a reader with the title of her debut novel, 32AA, and while the title and cover were catchy, the book delivered a fun read. |
